Outer Space

Motion Graphics

This brief was a collaboration between myself and Illustrator, Lucas Bowers. The brief asked us to create a method of visual communication with extraterrestrial life. Subsequently, showcasing Outer Space and life on the various biomes of Earth was my mission.

The group of Graphic Designers and Illustrators decided to make tangrams the centrepiece of our design. These have been drawn out in the forms of constellations, as well as seven distinct coloured shapes. The illustrations of planets within our Solar System are vibrant and playful, as denoted by the relatively flat clouds on Earth. Additionally, the biomes and meteors were created using Adobe’s Generative Fill.

When creating Motion Graphics, interacting with the elements is of pivotal importance. From the tiny pup following its parent wolf in the Arctic tundra, to the constellation of the wolf being animated along Trim Paths, information has to be delivered in an appealing manner. Reducing the opacity of the Lupus (wolf) constellation provides a neat segue into the next event, and keeps the viewer engaged. Zooming into the dark orange pixel from Earth into the savannah to see the elephant moving, is as informative as it is captivating.

In keeping with the informational theme for the aliens, the astronaut landing on Mars was indeed deliberate, as it shows a potential new frontier that humankind endeavours toward. The usage of colour for the tangrams ensured that emphasis was placed on the mammals, as their vibrant quality helps to make, say, the elephant stand out in the animation, rather than appear grey.
