Ardabil Door

Immersive Experience

This is the famous Ardabil Carpet from which I created the Ardabil Door.

For my Immersion workshop, I was tasked with creating a new context and purpose for my selected object from the V&A - that being the Ardabil carpet. Created in 1540, it is a carpet that pays homage to Shaykh Safi al-Din, in the town of Ardabil in north-west Iran.

Having noticed the rectangular frame that the carpet has, I considered objects of a similar aspect ratio that can be found in everyday life. I wanted to teleport the viewer into Persia - quite literally. There was the idea of a portal, but a door into a new realm worked elegantly. The Ardabil Door itself is very decorative and enticing. The blue and purple backdrop is rather reminiscent of a fairy tale, thus making it rather enchanting. Additionally, the usage of stone for the corners of the room gives the place a more palatial feel.
